The Long Hello

Is it just me or did Banana Republic kill it with this wrap dress? Hello brunch in NoLiTa with a metallic flat. Hello weekend upstate farm-hopping and shopping for vintage lamps. Welcome to my closet; we're going to be very close.

The Finishing Touch: Complete your Space with the Power of Three

When putting together a room, I tend to think big picture and leave the details for later. I'll pick out the paint, seating, rug, and lighting but when it comes time to accessorize well, let's just say it's on the very bottom of my to-do list. Now, I'm starting to finalize my space and I've come to realize that everything seems more complete when I group like items together in threes. Even though my finishing touches are small, much like some of these examples, the odd pairings really balance my small space and give it a finished and peaceful feeling.

Statement Staircases

If you are lucky enough to have a staircase in your space have you done anything special with it or does it just fade into the background? I'm guessing most of you picked the later of the two. Here are a few show stopping stairs -- some traditional, some a little more avant garde -- that you just can't miss.

Sometimes refinishing the banister or adding a fun runner just isn't in the picture (especially if you rent). But, if you think of the staircase just as you do with any other room in your house your stairs can become the focal point of the room.

Just because

Don't you love hearts? I do.
Just in case you haven't heard it today:
Happy Valentine's Day, readers!

Thanks, Alex. :)

Inspiration Monday: Love is...

Well, it's Valentine's Day. What say you about this holiday? I just so happen to love it. In college, before I was coupled up, my girlfriends and roommates would go all out for this holiday. Chinese food was always on the top of the list, a very special ganache cake, flowers, hand-selected valentine's day cards and, quite obviously, the most romantic movie of the 21st century: Moulin Rouge. We were all, for the most part, single but does that mean this day is reserved for the lovers? I don't think so.
I still send Valentines to all my friends (and a certain 5-year-old and 3-year-old I know) and, to me, that's the best part. Letting people who don't hear it every day from you that, yes, I do love you and you mean a lot to me.
So, while Jon is my Valentine today and every day, I think this holiday can so easily get lost in translation. Happy V-day to you and yours and hey, go get yourself a ganache cake, ok? I think we both know you deserve at least two pieces.

Tile Envy

My apartment building was built in the late 19th century and that is what I love most about it. The arched window casings, the brick that was undoubtedly constructed by immigrants looking to start a brand new life in a brand new world. Ah. I just love it all. However, the kitchen. The kitchen has more than its fair share of issues.

Before I get into that I thought I'd share what my ideal tile situation would be like. Sure, the one above is more country quilt than city kitchen, but if I lived alone (aka with no mans...yes, that 's' is supposed to be there) I would so rock this tile for a year or two.*

I even like the whole Mexican/South American vibe from the tile at this little tequila bar in the West Village. And yes, this picture was taken so I could document the tile just as much as it was so I could document my everlasting friendship with that little brunette on the right.

So now, when it comes to tile, you know what I'm into. Would you like to see what I am forced to live with?

I know! And this is only a little sample. There is also a painting of a lemon cut into two and a bunch of asparagus.  How strange. For the past year I've been living with my painted on fruit and quite honestly, I don't even notice it anymore.

Well, that was until I stumbled across tile tattoos. How great are these? They are cut to fit standard four inch kitchen tiles and are completely water resistant.

And, at less than twenty dollars for a set of six, I think this is a quick little fix that I can easily afford.

P.S. I know I've been a bad blogger but, without going into too many details, I've been working hard at my site redesign and it's not going too well. I've decided to put the project on hold until I can learn some more HTML that will give me what I want or until I can hire someone to do it all for me. If you know of any freelance web designs who take on side jobs, please feel free to email me their info or leave it in the comments section.

P.P.S. Because I've been neglected you, dear reader, please consider coming back tomorrow. I plan to continue the Tour My Small Space feature. The area I'm showing is about three square feet and, ironically, it is where I spend the most amount of time. The things we do to live in the city we love! See you tomorrow!

J.Crew Spring 2011 Lookbook

The weather in New York is freaking me out today. Major snow in the early morning and now it's sunny and perky and making me really crave tulips. J.Crew's spring lookbook has been out for awhile now but I've been apprehensive to post some of my favorite pics, until now. I want spring and I want it bad so I can think of no better way to summon a spring awakening than with the punchy palettes of everyone's favorite clothier.

I would wear this exact outfit to a chic wedding on a farm or in the wilderness. Like this one. (Come on, you know you want that wedding).

Inspiration Monday: Only cry when you win

Whew, wee what a weekend! Was yours all about football just as much as mine was? I'm exhausted from the anticipation of a history-making game, screaming at the television and the friendly-ish trash talk that started seven days ago, and finally-- ended yesterday.

I'm from Wisconsin where I, along with everyone else I know, was baptized into the religion of football at a very young age. And yes, the rumors are true: My main squeeze is from Chicago and yes: we are still very much in love despite the outcome of last night's game.

So, Inspiration Monday is brought to you by the mighty Green Bay Packers and their heroic-like season and post-season. They prove that the underdog will always have more to fight for, will always give 125 percent and will never let them see you sweat..err...(in keeping with this post's title, I'm going to have to go with) cry. Will never let them see you cry until the ticker tape is falling from the sky and the trophy is in your hand.

(Don't you love metaphors?)

A Romantic View

I love when I come across sweet little photos likes these. I always have a "How'd they do that?" moment. Well, now I know how. At least, I think I know. Check out these fun glasses. I so want a pair. Wouldn't that make a sweet little Valentine's Day card stuffer? I think so!
